Visiting my family in Canada this year has brought back so many great childhood memories. From the Christmas baking to seeing old friends and family. Driving down streets I grew up riding my bike or skateboarding on. But the thing that has captured my attention the most is singing Der Friedensfurst (The Prince of Peace). Its tradition to sing on Christmas morning in the church I grew up in Emmanuel Mennonite Church. I have been reading through and translating the lyrics they really are amazing and encouraging. So here they are... in German!!!
Der Friedensfürst
Horch, die Engelchöre singen,
Horch, die Engelchöre singen,
Dir, o mächt’ger Friedensfürst,
Du Heiland aller Welt.
Hört sie lieblich schallen,
Holde Freudenlieder,
Dir, o mächt’ger Friedensfürst,
Und ein Hosianna tönt auf Erden wieder,
Dir, o mächt’ger Friedensfürst.
Uns ist geboren heut’ ein Kind,
Uns ist geboren heut’ ein Sohn,
Und seine Herrlichkeit
Füllet die weite Welt,
Und er heisst, und er heisst
Wunderbar, Wunderbar,
Der mächt’ge Friedensfürst,
Wunderbar, Wunderbar,
Singt Hosianna, singt Hosianna,
Hosianna bringt dem Gotteslamm,
Singt Hosianna, singt Hosianna,
Hosianna bringt dem Gotteslamm.
Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen.
I would really love to have the English lyrics. We would like to sing this song with our youth group and most don't know the german language. Would it be at all possible for you to get me the English lyrics?
ReplyDeleteHi, can you direct me to the music sheet for this song?
ReplyDeleteThe best-publication that carried this anthem in the beginning was a song book called, Die Palme No-3. We provide that edition in both a darker and lighter version. Which you will prefer may depend on which one you find easier to read. Der-Friedensfuerst (the darker print). Friedensfuerst ( the lighter print).

The Osler Mennonite Church has used and adapted the Friedensfurest for many years, and gradually, with little edits now and then, devised an edition that works for them. They are offering it too, for those who might like to use it. Friedensfuerst-Osler-Mennonite-Edition
google did a great job
ReplyDeleteListen, the angel choirs sing
Listen, the angel choirs sing
To you, O mighty Prince of Peace,
You savior of all the world.
Hear them echo sweetly
Lovely songs of joy,
To you, O mighty Prince of Peace,
And a hosanna sounds again on earth,
To you, O mighty Prince of Peace.
A child is born to us today,
A son was born to us today,
And its glory
Fill the wide world
And it's called, and it's called
Wonderful, wonderful,
The mighty Prince of Peace,
Wonderful, wonderful,
The mighty Prince of Peace.
So sing about the glory of the Lord,
To him is the hymn of praise,
The heart lifts you so gladly,
Prince of Peace, full of praise and thanks.
Glory to the Lord on high,
Yes, glory be to the Lord on high,
And peace in the wide world
God's peace in the world.
Be merry, all peoples
And sing songs of joy
Bring honor and worship to Him,
To the Prince of Peace.
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
Hosanna brings the Lamb of God,
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
Hosanna brings the Lamb of God.
Amen, amen, amen, amen, amen, amen.
